The need for Security Surveys and Risk Assessments has never been greater since the tragedy of September 11th. The recognition by your company or by an individual as to the importance of security surveys is the first step towards improving their security program. The implementation of the survey’s suggestions is then required to ensure that safety.
What is a Security Survey or a Risk Assessment?
A Security Survey is a critical on-site examination and analysis of an industrial plant, business, home, public or private institution, to ascertain the present security status, to identify deficiencies or excesses, to determine the protection needed, and to make recommendations to improve the overall security. A Risk Assessment or Crime Prevention is the anticipation, recognition and appraisal of a crime risk and initiation of action to remove or reduce it.
Security Concerns
Initiating a Security Survey includes addressing several of the following concerns:
- What is the general purpose of the building? Is your business open to the public? Who has access to the secured areas?
- What are some of the hazards involving the building or its occupants?
- Are security guards cost effective?
- Are there physical changes that would make the building or residence more effective?
- Is the locking equipment or card control devices effective?
- Would an alarm system be cost effective?
- Signage. Are there adequate signs posted?
- Is lighting sufficient?
- Standards. Does the site comply with state or county requirements?
The Surveyor
The ability of the person conducting the survey should not be understated. The surveyor needs to have the ability to visualize the potential for criminal activity. In addition the surveyor must understand criminal methods of operation and the limitations of standard security devices. Also the surveyor must be knowledgeable about the type of security hardware necessary to provide various degrees of protection.
The Responsibility
The responsibility for the implementation of the recommendations from the survey rests with the recipient of the survey. A coordinated effort by both the surveyor and the recipient is necessary in order to have a cost effective means to providing the security solutions. It is the application of the security tools available and their respective costs, which will direct the recommended changes.
